Personal Development Programs

NAMA Personal Development Programs are designed to equip professionals and students with the knowledge and skills to deliver and contribute to effective, evidence-based anger management services. Philosophically, the knowledge and skills components of the Personal Development Programs are based on some core propositions. These include but are not limited to: an overview of anger problems, an understanding of the nature of anger, anger management skills & concepts, utilization of anger log and the role of trigger thoughts, an understanding of primitive/evolved brain functioning, cognitive distortion, the problems of shame and narcissism, the role of communication and assertiveness, role of stress, and the role of consequences. Practitioners with little experience with anger management can be educated to support self-management mental health qualities. This can be achieved by innovative, focused anger management skills based education programs that do not replicate in a dilute form traditional mental health training programs. Evidence suggests that skills and attitudes about anger management problems can be significantly improved through skills base focused education and training programs.

NAMA Personal Development Programs are underpinned by a philosophy of person-centered services and aims to promote the development and enhancement of anger management services by providing an advanced level learning environment. Professionals and students undertaking the Personal Development Programs will be enabled to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to make a meaningful contribution to supporting the provision of anger management services. Through the Personal Development Programs students will develop a critical and reflexive approach to working and learning grounded in evidence-based practice.

The training of anger management professionals is viewed as a partnership between employers, practitioners, educators and students. Within this partnership anger management training is considered to be a pursuit of lifelong learning of relevant skills and knowledge, personal and professional growth and development, increasing autonomy, multiplicity of thinking, tolerance of differences, and a sense of fulfillment in both private practice and community work. The goals of training, therefore, are to enable professionals and students to develop their knowledge and practical potentials and foster lifelong learning in the pursuit of excellence in practice.
